"C'mon, Hazel, it's just a little further," Sarhyn whispered the encouragement to a large, rather dirty, labrador retriever running by her side. When she lived with her family, she raised Hazelnut from pup-hood, and now, five years later, three years alone together on the road, they were best friends.

The "little further" Sarhyn had mentioned was a tiny glitch she had found in the alleyways. Everything for miles was dull and gloomy, covered with so much debris that her bright red converse shoes never hit the pavement. She had crafted little booties for Hazel to run with for fear of a broken whiskey bottle would harm those precious paw pads, and it was those booties that slowed down the run to heaven. Deep within the wall after entering from the South quarter and following the stench of putrid vegetables throughout the streets, a narrow opening in one of the ten foot high brick walls was just open enough to let by a very thin, determined girl and her underfed, but well-loved dog. "I found it earlier today when I left you by the lake," she whispered. Hazel whined at her master, giving her opinion of separating for any given amount of time.

Once they were through the hole, a very dark alleyway squeezed in between two decrepit apartment complexes, stretched on for as far as the human eye could see. With the trained knowledge of being partners for so long, Hazel stepped between her master's legs, guiding her through the pitch black dirt road. When she wanted Sarhyn to move right, she gently nudged against the inside of Sarhyn's right leg. When she wanted to go left, she leaned left. When she wanted to wait for safety, she put her cheek in front of Sarhyn's right leg, and when she wanted to speed up for safety, she put her cheek in Sarhyn's left leg. By the time they got through the alleyway, both dog and human were eager to see the light.

And there it was. Before them was a man-made river, connected to one of the existing lakes. The once kept forest had grown on its own, polite patches of rose and sunflower turning into a meadow-worthy melding of flowers. Hazel was the first to stop staring, running head-first into the stream and swimming about in circles. Sarhyn laughed, feeling safe in this haven. It was only a matter of time before she, too was bathing fully-clothed-a laundry service and bath becoming one.

Ennet had been sitting on a log in the shade brought to her from a small grove of feathery trees that hung around the little water supply that ran the length of the tiny clearing when she heard them coming. She was alerted far before they entered the most nknown clearing and the exclusive resting spot of the Vampire Elder. She had stumbled upon this clearing in much the same way these two new comers had, quite by accident and had since, used this place for her much needed quiet times when in Suddenly. She turned her emerald gaze on the dog, a most underfed, but obviously loved animal, perhaps friend to the girl who joined it in the water, and she smiled, making no reservations at hiding her slender canine’s, she was not ashamed fo what she was in any way, and here in Suddenly, she was quite well known to the families with children, at least.

Ennet closed her large book, not bothering to save her place in the mass of over 1000 pages, she had read ti so many times by now, that to feel the need to save a place was simply silly. She then stood and walked up to the small bank of the little river and slipped the bare toes of her right foot into the cool water.

“You know, wandering those alley’s isn’t always the best of ideas, even in bright day light.” She said in way of greeting to her present company. “I happen to know of six eyes that have been watching you form the start, but no worries, it is safe here.” She finished as she settled herself down on the grassy edge of the bank, right foot still soaking in the coolness of the water.

Sarhyn swam in circles underwater, even throwing in a little imaginary rumbling, then burst up to the surface, laughing hysterically. "Hazel, did you see? A washing machine, just like back home!" She gave her dog a pat on the head before splashing it with water. Hazel growled a half-hearted warning before giving a woof of surprise. Her growl turned entirely real and cautioned Sarhyn to look behind them.

Sarhyn turned slowly, gathering her magic as she turned. When she saw that it was just woman, she relaxed, but soon stiffened at the view of fangs. No way, no how had she crossed half the freaking world to get bitten by a vampire. She listened carefully to the woman's words, then relaxed once more. Nodding at the lady, she introduced herself. "I'm Rhyn, and I haven't any choice. No matter how many eyes watch me through the alleys, I have to wander them if I want to eat and sleep that day. I might as well be one of those eyes for all the good I do to the nice folks who expect to be murdered, not robbed."

Looking the vampire up and down, Sarhyn couldn't help tipping her head. "You're rather kind for the type you are. Last time a vampire headed me off was in South Carolina. Bugger nearly took out Hazel." Hazel whined as if giving her added bit to the story, displaying the cut across her paw as if she needed to show it off. "Came after me and Hazel jumped in the way," she said by way of explanation. With a shrug she said, "Who're you?" It had obviously been a while since Sarhyn had associated with anyone but her dog.

Ennet listened carefully to the young girl as she spoke, her mind thinking of the dog swimming next to her and she smiled slightly at the nice comment. If was definitely true that this one was new around Suddenly, definitely otherwise she would never have been startled at all by the sight of the vampire, or this vampire at least.

“How rude of me, I so often forget the formalities of names and such…” She grinned, further showing off her slender fangs in the process. “I am Ennet, it si my pleasure, I am sure.” She stated.

She paused as she looked at the two still treading water before her. “You know, if you wish to truly get out of these filthy streets, you should find yourself in the square during the evening, many merchants there are always looking for help, that or…” She thought again for a few moments, her emerald gaze looking past the two of them and into the water. “I happen to know of someone who could get you into the local Club for employment, if that is something that might please you.” She told her.

After she had finished speaking, Ennet smiled again. “Yes, it isn’t all too likely you will run into others of my kind and have such a pleasant experience, but…” She sighed. “I am a bit different than the others.” She finished and then fell silent again

Sarhyn grinned at the lady when she introduced herself. Ennet...what a pretty name. It suited her a lot. She hadn't heard someone be so civil in a looooong time. In fact, she'd never seen it at home, only in old movies. This vampire must have grown up a long while ago. She was letting herself enjoy the sound of the vampire's voice when a certain phrase had her peddling away from the vampire, still facing her. She didn't care how may smiles and nice phrases this lady had up her sleeve, the thought of evening merchants had her snarling silently, much as Hazel might.

"I'm sure those evening merchants can find other young girls to give them help." She growled. "Not me. Maybe before, but not now." Sarhyn glanced behind her, checking behind her to gage how well she could run away if she needed to. Finding the chances of getting away slim, she checked above her and saw nothing but open air. Looking at Hazel, she tried to calculate how far she could get carrying such a heavy load. Her calculations concluded...not very far. She'd have to get far enough away to give them a head start to run. The vampire might be fast, but they had been living in hiding for a long time. Surely they could get away from one vampire.

Ennet raised one fine brow in her general direction, the slight grin that had been there before grew to a true mirth-filled smile and then she laughed. “Oh no..” She laughed a bit more. “Not THAT kind of help I assure you, I would never sell you short in that direction, as a matter of fact, I would very much pleasantly love to rid the world of those merchants myself, if it wasn’t for my vow not to harm humans in Suddenly, that is.” She laughed again. “Honestly, look, if you really need work, look for or rather go to the Suddenly Club and ask for Miranda.” She stated. “She may not be the owner of the place, but might as well own it, if you know what I mean. She is, from what I have been told, very sweet and might even be willing to put you up in her own home until you got on your feet…” The vampire shook her head slowly. “Really, you have nothing to fear from me.” SHE put in, having heard the rush of blood in the veins of her company and smelling the sudden fear for flight.

She knew it wasn’t easy for a human, no matter what powers they held, to trust a vampire of any kind, but she hoped that this girl would take her advise, it was the best she could give. She honestly didn’t; want anything to happen to any living creature and protected the ones in Suddenly when ever she could from the Lycans and others of her kind and had even, in the past, nearly died to save an entire race from extinction and would certainly not harm one hair on either the creatures before her now, though there was no way they would know all that, and she understood quite well the girl’s apprehensions.

Sarhyn was as suspicious as could be. The vampire wasn't attacking, so she wasn't fleeing, but she could quite believe that this lady would be so kind to a stranger she just met. The absolute laughter at Sarhyn's lack of innocence had her cheeks flaming red. Her hands curled into fists beneath the water. Sarhyn hated being laughed at. A club that could use help? What could they possibly use her for? She hadn't danced a day in her life, she was terrible with people, and she didn't like to be in darkness without her Hazel. And Sarhyn could not imagine a club that would allow a dog in.

"Really you have nothing to fear from me."

Sarhyn raised a brow in an imitation of the woman's finely arched one, but it was a poor comparison. Sarhyn looked like a drowned cat, while this woman looked absolutely breath-taking. "I find that when people tell me I have nothing to fear, it is when I need to fear the most." She even tried to emulate the woman's exquisite speech, but it wasn't nearly as sophisticated-sounding. "I might drop by that club, but I doubt they'd have any use at all for me."

Ennet took a deep breath, taking in the smells of her surroundings, catching to good with the bad and she shook her head once more. “At the very least, you would have the opportunity to get out of the stench of the alleys and perhaps the one I told you about might have further information for you.” She told the girl as her right toes slipped from the water and her knees came up to be embraced but the woman’s arms as she delicately placed her chin on top of the pyramid, her emerald gaze laying on the human the entire time. She suddenly wondered if the girl had even taken the time to notice her difference from others of her kind in her, the breathing, the lack of animalistic behavior of any kind, her total human alikeness. She of course wouldn’t be able to hear the heart beating in her chest, the human wouldn’t have that great of hearing, though the canine would, to this Ennet smiled, her gaze still settled on the girl.

“Indeed, I do not blame you, it isn’t likely that you will find another such as myself in most of Suddenly, or at least, in this part of the place.” She stated as almost an afterthought. “You have every reason to reject what I tell you, every reason not to listen to me, or take my advice, though you as well have every opportunity and reason to make the life of your friend there, as happy as you can.” She finished, her eyes never moving, blinking once the entire time as she gazed at the girl. “Either way Rhyn, I do hope that you find a place in the city that doesn’t involve running into danger day after day. Life is far to precious to have to spend it looking over your shoulder every day.” She finished and then stood as fluidly as she had seated herself and smiled down at the two before turning away and walking back to her small cover of shade beneath the trees and picked up her book again as she settled herself back on the log once more, placing one ankle over the next and opening up to the exact page she had closed it on and began to read.

She didn’t want to press herself on the apprehensive pair, she wanted them to make their own decisions and having a vampire staring one down, no matter how sincerely nice they were, couldn’t be the most pleasant happening for any human who had dealt with her kind before.

Sarhyn stared after the vampire when she walked away. It was starting to get cold, and she shivered, totally soaked. Picking herself up onto the opposite bank, Sarhyn whistled for Hazel to come so she could hug her. She sat there, warming herself with Hazel, staring at the vampire as if waiting for the moment when she'd turn into a monster and come suck them dry. After a few minutes, Sarhyn started to feel very foolish. She hugged Hazel closer to herself and really thought about what it would mean to work like her parents. She'd been orphaned at thirteen, and even before that her parents had feared her. She closed her eyes, sending up a silent prayer for them and for herself. She didn't blame herself for their death, she blamed her ignorance. If she had been trained, she wouldn't have been able to kill them without meaning to. With a sigh, she thought bitterly of the little training she'd had.

Money from the job could give her the means to get more training. She could own a house, feed Hazel enough to not feel like skin and bones, take a bath every night. Well, maybe not every night. Still, there was so much she could do with a little money and respectability. "Where-" Sarhyn coughed, not believing that she was actually asking this. "Where exactly is the club?"

Ennet looked up from her reading and over at the soaked pair on the opposite bank of the small river, her emerald eyes seemed to sparkle a bit giving away her delight at the fact that Rhyn had actually taken her advice to heart.

“If you follow the ally to your right from there…” She pointed a finger at the opening to the clearing. “And keep going, don’t take any turns, though you may feel like you should…” Ennet knew the trick to the allies knew that their mazes could loose even the brightest hunter and tracker if they hadn’t known them all too well. “You will end up in the Housing district, follow the main road tot eh Square and the Club is off the Square to the right. You really can’t miss it, perhaps the biggest building in the area.” She told her and then brought her eyes back down tot eh page before her.

“Of course, I could walk with you, if you like.” She stated without looking up form the page.

Ennet hoped that the girl would take her up on her offer to walk with her, as those eyes she talked about earlier were still hanging around, waiting for them to part company, of course, should she not take her up on the offer, Ennet would follow her anyway, just to be certain she made it to her destination.

If Ennet had so much as glanced up at Sarhyn when she made the offer to walk her through the maze she was already sure she'd get lost in, she would have gotten up and strode away alone. Because Ennet showed absolutely no interest in taking her, Sarhyn felt a lot safer. She thought about it as thoroughly as she could. If she became friends with this woman...she might be safe for a while. And if this Miranda was just as kind, it would be like having the mentor she had never had before. Her mom had wanted nothing to do with her, freak that she happened to be, but Ennet seemed to understand.

Suddenly thinking of something, Sarhyn glanced up out of her reverie and at the form of the vampire. She doesn't know what you are. The thought was absolutely solid. There was no way this vampire could know what she was-no way anyone at all could know. Mages looked, breathed and smelled the same way humans did. It finally hit Sarhyn that she could start a totally new life here...become normal.

She smiled at Ennet with all the joy she could muster. "I would love for you to walk me to the club." She stated it firmly, deciding for the first time since she left home to actually trust someone.

Ennet was actually a little bit surprised at the girl’s decision and the amount of conviction she put into it as well. She looked up and smiled lightly at her. “Very well then, we can leave when you are ready.” She commented and then closed her book once more, though this time, instead of settling it on the log, she tucked it away in a sack she had tied to her waist and then stood up looking towards the opening that would lead them back into the ally. That opening just happened to be on this side of the bank and unless Ennet was mistaken, the two of them were going to have to get wet again in order to move out with her.

The vampire paused for a few moments and then, without so much as a blink of an emerald eye the water began to move about, swirling and twisting until it came to a standstill in front of the girl and her pet. “Just thought perhaps you would like a bridge to cross this time, it beats having to dry off again.” Ennet told her and then turned and walked to the opening that would lead them out, to wait for them to cross.

Sarhyn's eyes widened as the water bridge came to be-not because she was surprised that the vampire could do magic, but because she had been about to use her powers without thinking about it. If she was going to hide her being a mage from the world, she was going to need to be a little smarter than that. Murmuring a token thank you, Sarhyn moved a suspicious Hazel over the water bridge and to where Ennet was standing.

"Lead on. I may not follow too close because Hazel's the one who sees in the dark, but we'll be behind you." Sarhyn got to the opening and mentally prepared herself for her least favorite part of the whole excursion-following a vampire into a pitch black alley. She was determined to trust Ennet, but she still had to take a steadying breath to convince her body that it was going to be okay.
